How many cans of beer are imported from Germany to the United States every year?


Worldwide purchases of imported beer totaled US$15 billion in 2017. Overall, the value of beer imports increased by 16.2% for all importing countries since 2013 when international purchases of beer were valued at $12.9 billion.
Year over year, beer imports appreciated by 5.8% from 2016 to 2017.
From a continental perspective, countries in North America accounted for the highest dollar worth of imported beer during 2017 with purchases valued at $6.1 billion or 40.6% of the global total. In second place were European importers at 33.9% while 14.1% of beer imported worldwide was delivered to customers in Asia. Smaller percentages arrived in Latin America (5.6%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, Africa (2.8%) then Oceania (2.6%) led by Australia and New Zealand.
The 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix is 2203 for beer made from malt.
Below are the 15 countries that imported the highest dollar value worth of beer during 2017.
  1. United States: US$5.3 billion (35.5% of total beer imports)
  2. France: $819.9 million (5.5%)
  3. China: $750 million (5%)
  4. United Kingdom: $626.9 million (4.2%)
  5. Italy: $585.5 million (3.9%)
  6. Canada: $572.4 million (3.8%)
  7. Germany: $496.5 million (3.3%)
  8. Netherlands: $402.4 million (2.7%)
  9. Spain: $308.8 million (2.1%)
  10. Australia: $289.3 million (1.9%)
  11. South Korea: $263.1 million (1.8%)
  12. Chile: $205 million (1.4%)
  13. Belgium: $201.8 million (1.3%)
  14. Russia: $195.1 million (1.3%)
  15. Taiwan: $191.9 million (1.3%)

By value, the listed 15 countries purchased three-quarters (74.9%) of all beer imported in 2017. Within parenthesis is the percentage of overall beer shipments for each importer.
Among the above countries, the fastest-growing markets for beer since 2013 were: China (up 224%), South Korea (up 193.4%), Chile (up 50.6%) and Netherlands (up 37.7%).
Those countries that posted declines in their imported beer purchases were led by: Belgium (down -45.3%), Germany (down -14.8%), Italy (down -9.3%) and Canada (down -8.8%).
