Big Issue Vendor Faces Blindness and Bureaucracy — Needs Support Through Cataract Recovery

“Raymond Duggan, Big Issue vendor, now facing a difficult recovery from cataract surgery with complications.”

Hello,

My name is Raymond Duggan, a Big Issue vendor in the UK, and I’m sharing my story in the hope of raising awareness and support. I’m about to undergo cataract surgery, complicated by phaco burn and corneal folds, which requires a long recovery period of 6 to 8 weeks or more. During this time, I will be unable to earn my only income.

I sell The Big Issue, a magazine that provides my livelihood, independence, and a sense of community. But this job does not offer sick pay, and without income, I risk losing my home and access to essential medical care.

Adding to the challenge, setting up Universal Credit — the UK government support system — has been extremely difficult. Delays and miscommunication have left me without funds during a critical period of medical recovery, showing how vulnerable individuals can fall through the cracks.

Immediate needs include:

  • Rent: £111.47 per week

  • Transport to medical appointments

  • Basic living costs during recovery

How you can help:

  1. Donate via PayPal: raymond_duggan@sky.com

  2. Buy The Big Issue digitally: https://subs.bigissue.com/TBI/VENDOR/?badge=EML20036&vendor=Raymond

  3. Share this story with friends, media, and anyone who may be able to help.

With support, I can focus on healing and return to work without losing my home, income, or independence. Your attention and help could make a life-changing difference.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Raymond Duggan
