The Quiet Commute That Taught Me Presence

This morning, my commute was unusually quiet. Fewer cars, almost no chatter, just the soft hum of the train moving along the tracks.

Usually, I’d scroll through my phone or mentally list the day’s tasks, trying to get ahead. But today, I didn’t. I just looked out the window, noticing the soft light on the buildings, the way the trees swayed gently in the wind, the rhythm of the tracks beneath me.

It was a small, ordinary moment — but it reminded me how rarely we allow ourselves to simply be in the spaces between obligations. Life isn’t only in the big events; it lives in these quiet, unnoticed pauses.

Try it today: the walk to the store, the coffee break, the moment before a meeting. Pause. Look. Listen. Notice. You may find the ordinary holds more beauty than you thought.
